Madden 17 Hates Old People

Earlier this week, we looked at regression in Madden 17 and what a cruel, heartless bitch it can be. Once your ratings start to slide, it's like sliding down a slide that is very slippery and you just keep sliding even if you don't want to slide. What I'm trying to say is because of the constant regression, there isn't much chance for older players to be elite in Madden 17. Also, I haven't been on a slide in a long time.

This got me thinking: There are plenty of old players in Madden 17 who are good at the start. So what happens if we apply EA's regression rules to these players, but going backwards. What would Drew Brees's throw power have to have been when he was 30 years old for it to be  90 now when he's 37? If Steve Smith has 88 speed at age 37, how fast, according to the rules EA set up for regression, would he have been at 27? Let's find out!

Drew Brees

The four main QB traits affected by regression are throw power, speed, acceleration, and awareness. Each of those traits gets dinged 2 points per season starting at around age 29 for Star Dev.

Here's how Brees currently looks at age 37 and how we would have to look at age 29 if we assume EA's Madden 17 regression were applied to him starting at age 29:

Age 37 29
THP 90 106
SPD 68 82
ACC 71 87
AWR 99 111

So in order for Brees to survive M17 regression and have the stats he has now, he would have to have been so impossibly good at age 29, a super rare MUT card with his stats would have been rejected as too extreme.

"Yeah, well, maybe Drew Brees is an outlier. I think you should  come up with more examples so this post is longer." Good thinking, fake reader. I will do just that.

Quarterback regression obviously seems a little harsh. Considering how hard it would be to increase any traits on these guys at this age, the Madden 17 regression system just does not allow you to have great older quarterbacks.

"Maybe quarterbacks are the only position that is wonky. You ever think about that?" Hey, you're back! Yes, fake reader. Scroll down slightly for all kinds of old dudes.

If you are in a CFM, it looks pretty clear that your league won't have any Tony Romos or James Harrisons or Anquan Boldins or Drew Breeseseses. Old players can't be great in Madden 17. Regression will kick in around 28 or 29, and within a couple of seasons, your great players will be serviceable at best.
